Upcoming Important Events/Dates:
Reading and Writing: We are working on our reading unit, "Research Clubs: Elephants, Penguins, and Frogs, Oh My!" Students are practicing note taking skills on subtopics across multiple sources. They are enjoying becoming an expert and teaching their research club new facts about animals! Our writing unit is called, "Changing the World". Students are practicing developing opinions about persuasive topics, gathering evidence, and writing effective introductions to convince an audience to care about their cause. This writing unit also ties in with our inquiry unit on how to promote a growth mindset within our school and community.
Word Study:
We are currently reviewing irregular plurals in class.
Math:
We are currently in Module 7: Geometry and Measurement Word Problems and will continue with his module until the end of the school year. Remember, we are still collecting workbooks and checking homework on Fridays. THANKS TO ALL who are encouraging completion of the Zearn lessons every day to reinforce concepts we're learning! It's really making a difference in comprehension of these difficult units.
Science:
Our last two science units are EARTH SCIENCE - Weather and Climate, and Processes and Impacts of Natural Hazards. These units are especially relevant to kids in the spring here in Glen Ellyn due to the varied weather events that naturally occur here during April and May. We will examine guiding questions such as, "What weather patterns do we see in the winter?" and "Can lighting rods help prevent damage to tall buildings?" The standards we will use to guide our work in these units are: 3-ESS2-1, 3-ESS2-2, 3-ESS3-1, 3-5-ETS1-1, and 3-5-ETS1-2. We will continue to use our curricular resource, STEMScopes, to explore this life science unit and make connections to information we already know from past science units. The students can access STEMScopes from home using their regular login and password by visiting the Lincoln Library Media Center webpage.
